At dawn on June 14, 1846, 33 heavily-armed Americans gathered at the fortified adobe of General Vallejo on the north side of the Plaza in Sonoma. These men extremely displeased with Mexican rule demanded the surrender of the fortress, to which Vallejo swiftly agreed Subsequently, their leader William Ide, hoisted a new flag over the plaza. Using linseed oil brick dust and Venetian red paint, the flag was emblazoned with a grizzly bear, a star and the words ‘California Republic’. This event has gone down in history as the ‘Bear Flag Revolt’ and although the newly-declared republic was swiftly integrated into the Unites States, this flag serves as the official flag of the State of California to this day. California Republic’s wines celebrate these colourful defining moments of Californian history. Our Chenin Blanc bursts onto the plate with a riot of crisp apple fruit underpinned with touches of lemon, lime. Juicy peach and apricot.
